Liberty Travel
Liberty Travel, a travel agency, contacted Construction Coordinators, Inc. (CCI) to build a new flagship location for them on Washington Street in downtown Boston that could serve as a regional headquarters.
The project was far more intensive than expected. The floor was roughly two feet higher than the sidewalk, and so needed to be lowered. Moreover, Liberty wanted many of the supporting columns in the building removed in order to create a freer and more open space to mirror their name and travel-oriented mission. The combination of these factors led CCI to remove the entire second floor, as well as gut the basement and first floor. They then rebuilt the interior from the ground up, beginning with placing new columns (fewer than before), lowering the first floor by the necessary two feet, rebuilding the second floor, and replacing the roof. They then created a store interior and suite of offices on the first and second floors, respectively. Over the course of the project, CCI essentially built an entire building from ground up—all while on a busy Boston street.
Despite the intense work needed to renovate the Liberty Travel store, the end result was certainly worth it: a modern, sleek store and office building fit to serve the needs of one of the major players in the travel agency field.
